Shopify Sidekick Limitations: What It Can't Do (2026)

Key takeaways

  • Sidekick is mainly an admin tool. Since the Winter ‘26 Edition it can also adjust your theme’s existing settings and sections from inside the theme editor, but only what your theme already exposes.
  • It can generate a single new theme block from a description, but it can’t edit your theme’s code, build new sections or create landing pages.
  • For new sections, pages and code-level theme changes, you need a developer or an AI tool like Fudge that works directly with your theme.
  • Sidekick is most useful for operations, data, automations, content and quick settings-level theme tweaks.

Shopify Sidekick can’t edit your theme’s code, build new sections or layouts, create landing pages, pull data from outside Shopify, or build complex Flow workflows on its own. It handles admin tasks well, it can generate a single new theme block from a description, and since the Winter ‘26 Edition (released in December 2025) it can tweak your theme’s existing settings from the theme editor.

Here is what it cannot do as of October 2026, and what to use instead.

Why you can trust us

We build Fudge, the AI operator for Shopify stores, with a 4.9 rating on the Shopify App Store. It does the storefront work Sidekick can’t. We’ve been in the Shopify ecosystem for four years and work directly with merchants who use both tools.

Limitation 1: It can only adjust what your theme already has

This is the limitation merchants hit first.

Since the Winter ‘26 Edition, Sidekick works inside the theme editor. You click an element and describe the change, and Sidekick adjusts the matching settings: global theme settings such as colors, fonts and spacing, the settings of sections and blocks already on the page, and moving, removing or hiding existing sections. Nothing is applied until you save in the theme editor.

The ceiling is your theme’s settings. As of October 2026, Sidekick cannot:

  • Edit your theme files directly
  • Add a section type your theme doesn’t have
  • Build a layout your theme’s settings can’t express
  • Create new page templates
  • Edit images inside your theme

So “make the buttons on my homepage rounded” works if your theme has a button setting. “Add a comparison table section to my product page” doesn’t, if your theme has no such section.

Limitation 2: It can’t edit your theme’s code

Shopify themes are built on Liquid - Shopify’s templating language. Custom sections, conditional logic, metafield display, and most meaningful theme customizations involve Liquid.

Sidekick can generate one new theme block at a time from a description, and Shopify saves it as a Liquid file in your theme. That’s where it stops: it can’t edit or debug the code your theme already has, and block generation doesn’t work on vintage themes. If you need to:

  • Add a custom section to your theme
  • Change how an existing section works
  • Modify an existing section’s schema
  • Fix or debug code already in your theme

…Sidekick can’t do it for you. You need someone who knows Liquid, or a tool like Fudge that reads and edits your whole theme.

To write one by hand, see how to build a custom section in Shopify.

Limitation 3: It cannot build landing pages

Need a new landing page for a campaign? A custom collection page? A bundle page for BFCM?

Sidekick cannot build landing pages or new page templates. Basic pages are created under Online Store → Pages; custom layouts need a page template from the theme editor or a page builder that can generate the template and content together.

This is one of the most common frustrations merchants run into. Sidekick can write the copy for a landing page - but it cannot build the page.

Limitation 4: It cannot design beyond your theme’s settings

Sidekick can change colors, fonts and spacing, and move or hide existing sections, when your theme has a setting for it. Design work that goes past those settings is still outside its scope.

This includes:

  • Adding a sticky header or announcement bar your theme doesn’t already include
  • Showing different sections on mobile and desktop when your theme has no setting for it
  • Building a layout or visual style your theme’s settings can’t express

These need direct theme code edits, from a developer or a tool that writes theme code.

Limitation 5: Its content output needs editing

Sidekick can write product descriptions, email copy, and SMS messages - but the output is rarely publish-ready without editing.

It doesn’t know your brand voice. It doesn’t know what makes your product different from competitors. It will produce competent, generic copy that needs a human pass to feel like your brand.

Treat Sidekick’s content as a first draft, not a finished product.

Limitation 6: It cannot manage customer conversations

Sidekick can look up customer data - order history, spend, tags - but it isn’t a customer service tool. It doesn’t integrate with support inboxes, respond to customer emails, or handle live chat.

For customer service automation, you need a tool like Shopify Inbox, Gorgias, or similar.

Limitation 7: It cannot access data outside Shopify

Sidekick only knows what’s in your Shopify store. It cannot pull data from:

  • Your email marketing platform
  • Google Analytics
  • Meta Ads
  • Any third-party app unless it’s surfaced in Shopify’s native data

If you want cross-channel reporting or insights that combine Shopify data with external sources, you need a dedicated analytics tool.

Limitation 8: Advanced Flow workflows still need manual work

Sidekick can build simple Flow automations from a description, but complex multi-step workflows with branching conditions often still require manual setup in the Flow builder.

For example: “Send email A if the customer is in segment X, email B if they’re in segment Y, wait 2 days, then check if they’ve purchased and branch accordingly” - this level of logic typically needs direct work in Flow.

What Sidekick is actually good for

Despite its limits, Sidekick is a genuine time-saver for:

  • Pulling store data without navigating to reports
  • Creating discounts quickly
  • Building simple Flow automations
  • Writing first-draft product and email copy
  • Managing B2B accounts
  • Monitoring your store proactively via Pulse
  • Settings-level theme tweaks in the theme editor

The key is knowing what bucket your task falls into. Admin, operations and quick settings tweaks - reach for Sidekick. New sections, pages and theme code - reach for something else.

FAQ

Why can't Shopify Sidekick build new sections or pages?

Shopify built Sidekick as an admin assistant: it works on data and settings (products, customers, orders, automations and, in the theme editor, your theme's existing settings) rather than on your theme's code, apart from generating single theme blocks. New sections and pages mean writing Liquid, CSS and JavaScript, plus a draft and preview workflow, which Sidekick doesn't include.

Can Shopify Sidekick edit my theme?

Partly. Since the Winter '26 Edition, released in December 2025, Sidekick can change your theme's existing settings and move, remove or hide existing sections from inside the theme editor, and you save the changes manually. As of October 2026 it can also generate a single new theme block, but it still can't edit your theme's code, build new sections or create landing pages. For those, one option without a developer is Fudge, the AI operator for Shopify stores: describe the change in plain English and Fudge writes the code into your theme as a draft, with a preview, so nothing goes live until you approve it.

Can Sidekick write Liquid code at all?

Only for single theme blocks. Sidekick can generate a new block from a description, saved as a Liquid file, but it doesn't edit your existing templates or sections. For anything bigger without a developer, Fudge is the merchant-facing option: describe what you want, get the Liquid written into your theme as a draft, review the preview and publish when it looks right.

Why doesn't Sidekick integrate with my email marketing tool?

Sidekick is scoped to data inside Shopify. External tools (Klaviyo, Mailchimp, ConvertKit) live outside Shopify's data model. If those tools have an installed Shopify app that exposes data into Shopify Flow, Sidekick can use it for automations — but it can't directly query Klaviyo's analytics or send emails via Klaviyo's API.

What's the difference between Sidekick and Flow's AI assistant?

Flow's assistant appears to be Sidekick scoped to building workflows. Inside Flow, it is limited to creating Flow workflows. In the main admin chat, Sidekick has broader capabilities, such as querying data, drafting content and managing customers and discounts.
