Customize our agents.md with a short brand overview.

Customize our agents.md: add a short brand overview, our main collections and our shipping and returns basics, and keep the shopping links Shopify includes.
- Every Shopify store already serves /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt.
- Fudge adds your own wording with one theme template,
agents.md.liquid. - It's brand framing for AI agents, not a ranking lever.
- You don't need an llms.txt app.
What you're trying to do
Shopify serves /agents.md on every store, and /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt mirror it. The default is a set of instructions for AI agents: how to shop the store, where its agent endpoints and sitemap are, and links to its policies. It doesn't describe your brand, products or collections. Customizing it lets you add that framing in your own words. It won't move rankings, but it does decide what an agent reads first when it opens the file.
Things to watch out for
- Hand-written. The template can't read your products or collections, so update it when your range changes.
- Scope.
agents.md.liquiddrives all three URLs. Addllms.txt.liquidonly if /llms.txt must say something different. - Expectations. Google says its AI features need no AI text files. Fix your product data first.
- Theme. The template lives in your theme, so carry it over when you switch themes.
How Fudge does it
Fudge writes templates/agents.md.liquid in a draft theme, using Shopify's agents object for your store name, URL, sitemap and agent endpoints so they stay correct. You read the file, ask for changes, and publish when you're happy. Your live /agents.md and /llms.txt don't change until then.
What Shopify already serves at /llms.txt
Every Shopify store serves three files for AI agents: /agents.md, /llms.txt and /llms-full.txt. /agents.md is the main one, and the other two mirror it. Shopify documented this in a changelog entry on May 28, 2026 (Customize /llms.txt, /llms-full.txt and /agents.md), and its Help Center page on agentic storefronts covers the same files.
The default file starts with “Agent Instructions” and your store name. It points agents to the Shop skill, your store’s UCP and MCP endpoints and WebMCP, sets rules for how agents should behave, and gives read-only pointers to your sitemap, product URLs and store policies.
It does not describe your products or collections. It’s a set of instructions for AI shopping agents, not an llmstxt.org-style summary of your site.
To see yours, open yourstore.com/agents.md in a browser.
Do you need an llms.txt app?
No. The file already exists on your store, and Shopify generates the default for you. If you installed an llms.txt app, you can probably uninstall it. Our guide to Shopify ChatGPT search optimization says the same, and covers what does affect AI visibility.
What customizing changes
You customize the files with one theme template, templates/agents.md.liquid, added under Online Store, Themes, Edit code, Templates. It drives all three URLs.
For /llms.txt, Shopify uses llms.txt.liquid if your theme has one, then agents.md.liquid, then its own default. So you only need llms.txt.liquid when /llms.txt should say something different from /agents.md.
The template only has access to the request and agents Liquid objects (Shopify’s template docs). Those give you your store name, store URL, sitemap URL and agent endpoint URLs. There is no access to products or collections, so a section about your range is text you write and update yourself.
Good additions are short and factual:
- A brand overview. What you sell, who it’s for, what makes you different.
- Your main collections. A line or two each, with links.
- Shipping and returns basics. The short version, linking to your full policy pages.
Keep Shopify’s store links and agent endpoints, and leave out contact email and phone numbers. Shopify’s default leaves them out too, and the file is cached widely and served to every agent.
What it won’t do
Don’t expect it to move your Google rankings. Google’s guide to AI features and your website is direct: “You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features.”
It also isn’t how your products reach ChatGPT. Shopify sends product data to ChatGPT and other AI channels through Shopify Catalog, separately from these files, so the product data itself is what to get right.
Treat the file as brand framing: it decides what an agent reads first when it opens your store’s instructions. Fix your product data and on-page content first.
How Fudge handles it
Ask Fudge to customize your agents.md and it writes templates/agents.md.liquid in a draft theme. It pulls your store name, URL, sitemap and agent endpoints from Shopify’s agents object rather than hardcoding them, adds the brand and catalog wording you ask for, and leaves out contact details. You review it and publish when it’s right.
Fudge’s site audit also checks that your store serves /llms.txt. It treats a file left at Shopify’s default as a low-priority item, because the default already works.
For the work that does move AI visibility, pair this with an AEO audit and bulk schema markup.
Fudge does this as part of its AI discovery work.
