Key takeaways
- Shopify’s Fall ‘26 Edition launched on October 28, 2026 with more than 150 updates under the theme “Exponential”. It is Shopify’s tenth Edition.
- Your products can be bought inside more AI assistants: Google’s AI Mode and Gemini with Shopify’s checkout, and Shop Pay inside Meta’s Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct.
- Shopify’s own AI now works on the store itself. Sidekick can plan and stage several changes at once, Canvas lays out the whole store for AI editing, and a new theme format is designed for AI agents.
- Many headline features are early access, “rolling out” or held until after the holidays. Checkout custom fields, for example, will not ship before or during BFCM.
- Four jobs are worth doing before Black Friday: check your Shopify Catalog eligibility, publish accurate business details for AI channels, fill gaps in your product data, and keep big theme changes off your live store.
What matters most in Shopify’s Fall ‘26 Edition is that AI now works on both sides of your store. Shoppers’ agents can find and buy your products in more places, from Google’s AI Mode to Meta’s Muse. And Shopify’s own AI can now plan and apply changes to the store itself. Shopify calls the theme “Exponential”. President Harley Finkelstein put the idea in one line: “Everything we launch becomes the foundation for what comes next.”1
The timing matters as much as the content. Last year’s equivalent, the Winter ‘26 Edition, landed on December 10. This one arrived on October 28, a month before Black Friday on November 27. So below we rank the updates by impact for a merchant, and we say which ones you can actually use this BFCM and which ones are for 2027.
Why you can trust this take
We have read every Shopify Edition for the past four years and have worked with hundreds of brands on their storefronts. We build Fudge, the AI operator for Shopify stores, with a 4.9 rating on the Shopify App Store. Everything Fudge builds is native Shopify theme code, the layer this Edition changes most. We also read past the keynote, through the help center, the changelogs and the developer docs, because that is where the “early access” and “not before BFCM” details live.
What is the Shopify Fall ‘26 Edition?
The Fall ‘26 Edition is Shopify’s product release for the second half of 2026, launched on October 28, 2026 with more than 150 updates.2 Shopify’s pitch is network effects: every merchant benefits from every other merchant on the platform. The center of gravity is AI in two directions. One is selling through AI assistants (Google AI Mode and Gemini, Claude, Grok, Meta’s Muse and Instinct). The other is running the store with AI (Sidekick, Canvas and a theme format built for agents). Around that sit practical updates for fraud, checkout, launches, POS, Shop, analytics and fulfillment.
It follows the Spring ‘26 Edition from June, which laid the groundwork with the Universal Commerce Protocol and Shopify Catalog. Several Fall ‘26 items also shipped earlier in October and are bundled here, so some of what you read today is already in your admin.

1. Your products can be bought in more AI assistants
What changed. Spring ‘26 built the plumbing for AI shopping. Fall ‘26 plugs it into the assistants people already use.
- Google AI Mode and Gemini. Shoppers can buy your products in Google Search’s AI Mode and the Gemini app through a checkout powered by Shopify, and the order lands in your admin like any other.2 It is rolling out to shoppers in the US, Canada and Australia, so you need to sell to customers there, and direct checkout is on by default for eligible stores. You need Google Merchant Center, Shopify Catalog eligibility, the agentic terms and complete store policies. Subscriptions, product bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products are not supported, so your BFCM bundles will not sell this way.3 Google began emailing Merchant Center users with eligible Shopify stores about it in September.4
- Shop Pay in personal agents. Shoppers can approve a purchase and pay with Shop Pay inside Meta’s Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct.5 In Muse it works for Shopify stores. In Claude Duet, Instinct and, Shopify says, Grok Bot it works at any online store, including brands not on Shopify. For a store without Shop Pay, the agent gets a one-time payment credential, so the shopper’s card details are not shared. Shoppers can also set a weekly, monthly or total budget that lets an agent pay for them.6
- A Shop skill for any agent. shop.md turns ChatGPT, Claude or another agent into a personal shopper that searches more than a billion products in Shopify Catalog and checks out with Shop Pay.5
- Sale prices reach the agent. Shopify Catalog passes your compare-at price to AI agents so they can show a markdown. This one shipped on October 9 and needs no setup.2 You can review it under Sales channels > Agentic > Sources > Shopify Catalog > Review product data mapping, in the List price section.7
- An eligibility check. The same place in the admin now explains why a store is not in Shopify Catalog. The basics: the Starter plan or higher, no storefront password, products with a title, an image and a price above zero, and an account in good standing.8
- Your business details, approved by you. The Knowledge base moved into Sales channels > Agentic. Shopify drafts facts about your store from your storefront, and nothing reaches an agent until you publish it. The standalone Knowledge Base app shuts down on January 15, 2027.9
Shopify is careful about who owns the result. VP of Product Vanessa Lee: “The order is still the merchant’s. The customer relationship is still the merchant’s.”10
Why merchants care. An agent recommends what it can read and trust. Until now most merchants could not see what an assistant knew about their store. The eligibility check and the business-details review change that, and compare-at sharing landed just in time for the biggest discount week of the year.
What to do. Run the eligibility check first. It decides whether you get checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, and whether the agents that read Shopify Catalog see your products at all. Then read the facts Shopify drafted about your store and fix anything vague or wrong before you publish, starting with shipping, returns and sizing. Our guide to the Shopify Knowledge Base walks through how those answers work, and the free Shopify Catalog data audit shows how shopping agents see your products today.
Product facts are where most stores fall short. If an agent cannot find a material, a size or a care detail, it moves on to a store that lists it. Fudge’s AI discovery work finds those gaps and drafts the missing details from your own product data and supplier sheets for your team to approve. You can ask for it directly:
“Find the products in our Black Friday collection that are missing materials, sizes or care details. Draft the missing facts from our product data, and add FAQ blocks for delivery and returns.”
2. Sidekick and Canvas: Shopify’s AI now works on the store
What changed. Sidekick is turning from an assistant that answers into one that does the work. Shopify says daily Sidekick sessions grew 4.2x year over year.2
- Plans and staged changes. Sidekick drafts several store changes into one set, like rewriting the description of every product in a collection, and you approve them together.2 A set holds up to 50 changes. This is in early access for some stores.11
- Code, research and memory. Sidekick can write and run its own code to forecast, compare or summarize store data, though not in every store. Its suggestions can now draw on web research about your market and data from supported apps.11
- Ideas tested on simulated shoppers. Sidekick can build a proposed change on an unpublished copy of your theme and compare it with your live theme using SimGym, Shopify’s AI shoppers. It is marked “Tested by Sidekick” only if the copy gets a higher add-to-cart rate. Shopify is clear that these are not live A/B tests on real shoppers. Early access, desktop changes only.12
- It reads instructions about your theme. Themes can carry two markdown files, AGENTS.md (how the theme is built) and DESIGN.md (the design intent), and Sidekick in Canvas reads them before it makes changes.13
- More of the admin. Draft orders, pricing advice from Shopify Smart Pricing, payout and chargeback questions, and guidance in the checkout and accounts editor.2
Canvas, the design surface Shopify launched on October 1, puts every page of your store on one workspace where you click to edit or ask Sidekick. It is still early access. A theme edited in Canvas opens only in Canvas, stops receiving theme updates and does not support app blocks or app embeds yet.14 Shopify also announced that you will be able to design with Canvas from ChatGPT, Claude and other agents, but its help pages say that is not available yet.14
The new theme format. Shopify announced a Liquid-first way to build themes, where page structure lives in the Liquid template instead of a separate JSON file. It brings blocks, typed contracts and partial updates, plus the markdown files above, and Shopify says themes built this way are ready to edit with Sidekick in Canvas.15 It started as a developer preview in July, it runs alongside existing themes rather than replacing them, and there is no release date for general availability yet.16
Why merchants care. Look at the format Shopify picked for its AI-first future: native Liquid in your theme, plus written notes that tell an agent how the theme is built. Shopify is designing the storefront so AI edits theme code directly. Pages that render through a page builder’s own app layer sit outside that.
What to do. If you have early access, try Sidekick’s staged changes on low-stakes bulk work, like tidying descriptions in one collection, and read every change before you approve it. Keep Canvas and the new theme format off your live store until after BFCM. If you have a developer, adding an AGENTS.md file that explains your theme is a cheap way to get better AI edits from any tool. We covered Canvas in detail in the October 2026 Shopify updates.
Where Fudge fits now that Sidekick plans changes
Sidekick is the assistant you ask. Fudge is the operator you give a goal.
With Sidekick you decide what to change and Sidekick does it. With Fudge you pick an outcome, like growing search traffic, showing up in AI answers or raising order value. Fudge reads your Shopify data, Google Analytics and Search Console to find what is worth doing, builds it as drafts in your theme for your team to approve, and compares the numbers before and after each change to decide what to do next. It works in the theme you already run, so you do not have to move to a new editor or theme format to use it.
Both write native theme code, so they work side by side. Use Sidekick for the admin jobs it handles well, like draft orders and payout questions, and give Fudge the growth goals.
3. Fraud, launches and checkout: what helps this Black Friday
Shopify Protect. Shopify’s new fraud protection blocks near-certain fraud before payment is authorized, stops card-testing bots, explains an order’s risk in plain language and drafts AI dispute responses, with delivery photos when you ship with Shopify Shipping.17 Shopify says Protect is on for every business on Shopify Payments, while the Editions page labels its features “rolling out soon”.2 Custom fraud rules come through a separate app, Shopify Protect: Rule Builder, which lets you preview a rule against your last 90 days of orders before it goes live. It is free to install, then $0.07 per screened transaction.18 For BFCM, the plain-language risk explanations are the part to use: they help your team decide quickly which flagged orders to ship.
Rollouts. One rollout can schedule or test your theme, checkout configuration, discounts and market catalogs together.19 A Launch is permanent, an Event rolls back on its own when it ends, and an Experiment splits traffic 50/50 by default. Experiments need the Grow plan or higher. Two limits to know. An Experiment, or an Event at less than 100% reach, only changes your online store, so your ads and product feeds can show different prices from what some visitors see. A Launch or a 100% Event also updates checkout, POS and your Google and YouTube product feeds, but connected channels update on their own schedule, so check them by hand. For a sale that starts on Black Friday and ends after Cyber Monday, an Event is one schedule instead of a night of manual switches.
Search and SimGym. Shoppers searching your store get better suggestions while they type, and Shopify says add-to-carts from search went up 8%.2 SimGym simulations can now take a shopping goal and show where on the page to make a change.
Checkout. Custom fields in the checkout and accounts editor let you collect things like delivery instructions or gift messages without an app. Plus stores get every field type, and other plans get delivery instructions and gift messages. Shopify says they will not be released before or during Black Friday Cyber Monday.20 A tiled layout for payment methods, a stacked form and an animated thank-you page are also listed as rolling out or coming soon.2 None of them belong in your BFCM plan.
Marketing. Shopify Messaging has a pre-built Black Friday email campaign you can preview, edit and schedule, plus automated WhatsApp messages for browse, cart and checkout abandonment. Shop Campaigns now runs in over 35 new markets.2
If your Black Friday plan still needs a landing page, see our Black Friday landing page examples and the week-by-week Shopify BFCM playbook. In Fudge, the page is one request in the store editor:
“Build a Black Friday landing page for our gift sets with a countdown to November 27, a free-shipping bar for orders over $75 and our three best-selling bundles. Match our theme’s fonts and colors.”
4. The rest of Fall ‘26, in brief
Everything in this table comes from Shopify’s Edition announcements.2 5
| Area | What’s new |
|---|---|
| Shop | Universal checkout lets shoppers buy from several brands in one cart in the Shop app. Each store still gets its own order. Store branding syncing to Shop is in early access. |
| Merchandising | Product data mapped per sales channel, collections that mix products and variants, variants edited on the product page, and up to 20 barcodes per variant. |
| AI tools | Manage your store from inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot, Grok and Muse, including products, inventory and discounts. Orders and customers are read-only. |
| Payments | Shopify Tax handles US sales tax for businesses new to Shopify, and Managed Markets offers all-in international prices with flat-rate shipping. |
| POS | Wider recognition of shoppers who have checked out at any store using Shopify Payments, scheduled stock counts, carts shared across devices, and more local payment methods in store. |
| Operations | The redesigned admin keeps rolling out, plus passkeys, a seller health checklist, bot-filtered sessions in analytics and Flow triggers on field changes. |
| Fulfillment | A Shop Promise badge for eligible US stores that ranks products higher in Shop and Shopify Catalog search, DHL Express labels in five European markets, and native stock counts. |
| Languages | Online stores in Arabic, Hebrew and Urdu on Horizon-family themes, and 13 more languages with built-in checkout and theme translations, including Basque, Catalan and Ukrainian. |
5. Developer changes and deadlines
- Script tags. Since October 1, apps cannot create or update script tags on any API version, and on March 1, 2027 Shopify stops loading storefront script tags. The replacement is an app embed block, or a web pixel for analytics.21 Our October 2026 updates cover what to check in your theme.
- Expiring tokens. Public apps must move to expiring offline access tokens before January 1, 2027 or be delisted from the Shopify App Store. From April 1, 2027, requests with the old tokens fail. Custom apps and apps created by merchants are excluded.22
- Global Catalog REST API. It stops serving traffic on November 2, 2026.23
- The new theme format. Liquid
{% block %}and{% partial %}tags, typed contracts through{% doc %}, and AGENTS.md and DESIGN.md files of up to 50 KB each at the theme root.16 13 - Agentic APIs. The Universal Commerce Protocol gains a /buy endpoint for cart and checkout links and an /ask endpoint that answers questions from facts a business published. The Catalog API can now search products not on Shopify (beta).2 For the protocol itself, see our UCP readiness guide.
- Tooling. A redesigned Dev Dashboard, a Shopify CLI tuned for agents’ non-interactive use, Python and PHP app packages, and Hydrogen with agent skills and one-click deploys to Vercel.2
What the outside voices are saying
The Edition is only hours old and independent coverage of it is thin. Most of what it packages has been rolling out since September, though, and analysts and developers have plenty to say about those pieces.
Analysts back the direction, not the timeline. Forrester’s Emily Pfeiffer predicts that in 2027 one in 20 US and UK consumers will replace traditional shopping with conversations, and tells retailers to “build toward automated shopping and buying now”, especially if those early adopters look like their customers. The same report says consumers remain wary of agents buying for them because of errors, security and privacy.24 Adobe forecasts that traffic from AI services to US retail sites will grow 130% this holiday season and 95% on Black Friday, counted as shoppers clicking a link from an AI tool.25 Adobe does not publish the base, so read that as fast growth from a small share.
Some retailers are pushing agents away. Gizmodo reported that The RealReal is hardening its site against third-party agents and that Amazon blocked Meta’s Muse.26 Shopify is going the other way and wants every store reachable by every agent by default. Google’s checkout is a good example: it switched on automatically for eligible Shopify stores, with an opt-out under Sales channels > Agentic.4
Developers want guardrails on AI theme editing. When Canvas launched, developers on Shopify’s own forum worried that apps would break because Canvas could not add theme app extensions, and a Shopify staff member replied that support was planned within weeks.27 Writing about the new theme format in September, independent Shopify developer Eduard Fastovski welcomed Tailwind support, since AI already writes it well, but argued that Shopify may need stronger version control for AI edits.28 Steve Hutt of eCommerce Fastlane named “redesign churn” as the biggest risk Canvas brings to growing stores.29
Our read. We agree with the bulls on where this goes and with the developers on how to get there. AI agents will sell more of your products, and AI will make more of your store changes. The stores that do well will know what each change was for and check whether it worked. That is how we built Fudge: every change starts as a draft with a reason, nothing goes live without your approval, any change can be rolled back, and Fudge compares the numbers before and after so the next change builds on results.
What to do before Black Friday
Five moves, in order:
- Check your Shopify Catalog eligibility under Sales channels > Agentic and fix what it flags. It decides whether you get checkout in Google AI Mode and Gemini, and whether agents that read Shopify Catalog see your products.
- Publish accurate business details for AI channels. Read the facts Shopify drafted, correct shipping, returns and sizing, then test the answers with our free Knowledge Base checker.
- Check every compare-at price before your sale goes live. Agents now show the comparison, so each one should be a price you can stand behind.
- Fill your product data gaps: materials, sizes, care details and barcodes. Fudge drafts the missing facts from your own data for your team to approve.
- Freeze big theme changes until December. Explore Canvas and the new theme format on a copy, and keep your live theme stable through Cyber Monday.
FAQ
When was the Shopify Fall '26 Edition released?
Shopify released the Fall '26 Edition on October 28, 2026, with more than 150 updates under the theme Exponential. It is Shopify's tenth Edition and arrived about a month before Black Friday.
What are the biggest updates in the Shopify Fall '26 Edition?
Checkout inside Google AI Mode and Gemini, Shop Pay inside personal AI agents like Meta's Muse, Claude Duet, Grok Bot and Instinct, and a shop.md skill for any agent. Sidekick can now plan and stage several changes at once, Canvas and a new theme format are built for AI editing, and Shopify Protect and Rollouts help with fraud and launches.
Can I sell in Google AI Mode and Gemini with Shopify?
Yes, if your store is eligible. Shopify's direct checkout in AI Mode and the Gemini app is rolling out to shoppers in the US, Canada and Australia, and it is on by default once your store qualifies. You need Google Merchant Center, Shopify Catalog eligibility, the agentic terms and complete store policies. Subscriptions, bundles, customizable products and B2B-only products are not supported yet.
What's new in Shopify Sidekick in the Fall '26 Edition?
Sidekick can stage up to 50 store changes for you to approve together, write and run code on your store data, use web research and app data in its suggestions, and test proposed theme changes on SimGym's simulated shoppers. Several of these are in early access, so not every store has them yet.
Should I switch to Canvas or Shopify's new theme format before Black Friday?
No. Both are early: Canvas is in early access and the new theme format is a developer preview with no release date. A theme edited in Canvas stops receiving theme updates and does not support app embeds yet. Test on a copy and keep your live theme stable through Cyber Monday.
Are Shopify checkout custom fields available for BFCM 2026?
No. Shopify says checkout custom fields will not be released before or during Black Friday Cyber Monday. When they arrive, Plus stores get every field type and other plans get delivery instructions and gift messages.
How is Fudge different from Shopify Sidekick?
Sidekick is the assistant you ask to make a change. Fudge is the AI operator you give a goal, like growing search traffic or raising order value. It finds what is worth doing from your Shopify data, Google Analytics and Search Console, builds it as drafts in your theme for your approval, and compares the numbers before and after each change.
