Duplicating a section is the fastest way to create repeating layouts - copy a section you’ve already configured and modify the duplicate with new content. Here’s how to do it.
Why you can trust us
We’ve built and customised hundreds of Shopify storefronts. We also built Fudge - an AI storefront editor with a 5.0 rating on the Shopify App Store.
How to duplicate a section in the Theme Editor
Step 1. Go to Online Store > Themes > Customize.
Step 2. Navigate to the page with the section you want to duplicate.
Step 3. In the left sidebar, hover over the section name. A three-dot menu (ellipsis icon) appears to the right of the section name.
Step 4. Click the three-dot menu and select Duplicate.
Step 5. A copy of the section appears directly below the original, with all of its content and settings intact.
Step 6. Click into the duplicate to edit its content and make it unique.
Step 7. Reorder it to your desired position by dragging it in the sidebar.
Step 8. Click Save.
What gets copied when you duplicate
When you duplicate a section, Shopify copies:
- All text content in the section’s blocks
- Image selections
- Color scheme settings
- Padding and spacing settings
- All block structure and order
You get a complete copy. This means you can use it immediately as a starting point and change only the parts you need.
When duplicating sections is useful
Building out a features page. Configure one feature block with the right layout and styling, then duplicate it for each additional feature. Edit the text and icon in each copy.
Multiple call-to-action sections. Set up one CTA section with your preferred design, duplicate it for secondary CTAs on different parts of the page, and update the heading and button text in each.
Repeating content rows. Product comparison rows, team member bios, pricing tier cards - any repeating structure is faster to build from a duplicate than from scratch.
Testing layout variations. Duplicate a section before making significant changes so you have the original to refer back to (or revert to).
What if the three-dot menu isn’t there?
Not all themes support section duplication. Older themes and some custom-built themes may not include this option in the sidebar.
If you don’t see a three-dot menu on sections:
Option 1 - Check your theme version. If you’re on an older version of your theme, there may be an update available. Theme updates sometimes add Theme Editor features.
Option 2 - Add the section again manually. Click “Add section” at the bottom of the sidebar, add the same section type, and re-enter the content.
Option 3 - Use Fudge. Fudge can duplicate and populate sections programmatically. Describe what you need:
“Add three more feature blocks to the features section on the homepage, formatted the same way as the existing ones. Use these titles and descriptions: [your content].”
After duplicating - tips for efficiency
- Rename your sections. Some themes let you rename sections in the sidebar to keep track of them. Click the section name to see if it’s editable.
- Duplicate before deleting content. If you’re unsure about a section, duplicate it before editing so you have the original as a fallback.
- Reorder immediately. The duplicate appears right below the original - drag it to your desired position before you start editing its content.
How do I create a dynamic section in Shopify?
A dynamic section is one that can be added to any page template (not just the homepage) via the Theme Editor. Most modern Online Store 2.0 themes support this by default. If you want to build a custom section type from scratch — with its own settings and block structure — see our guide on how to build a custom section in Shopify.
