Key takeaways
- Edit a single product title from Products > select product > Title field.
- Bulk edit titles by ticking multiple products and clicking Edit products.
- Changing a title does not automatically update the URL handle — you need to update that separately.
- The product title becomes the H1 on the product page, so it matters for SEO.
Updating a product title in Shopify is straightforward, but there are a few things worth knowing before you change one — especially if the product is already indexed by Google.
Why you can trust us

How to edit a product title in Shopify
Step 1. From your Shopify Admin, go to Products.
Step 2. Click the product you want to update.
Step 3. At the top of the product editor, you’ll see the Title field. Click into it and update the text.
Step 4. Click Save.
That’s it. The updated title appears immediately in your store, on product listings, and in the cart.
How to bulk edit product titles in Shopify
If you need to update titles across several products at once, the bulk editor saves time.
Step 1. Go to Products.
Step 2. Tick the checkboxes next to the products you want to update. To select all, tick the checkbox at the top of the list.
Step 3. Click Edit products in the action bar that appears.
Step 4. A table opens with a Title column. Click into any title cell and edit directly. Tab between cells to move quickly.
Step 5. Click Save when done.
The bulk editor is useful for cleaning up naming inconsistencies across a product range or adding consistent prefixes (e.g., “Classic -”, “Limited Edition -”).
Does changing a product title change the URL?
Not automatically. Shopify uses a separate field called the URL handle (found under the SEO section on the product page, labelled “URL and handle”). When you create a product, Shopify auto-generates the handle from the title — but editing the title later does not update the handle.
This is intentional. If the handle changed every time someone edited a title, existing links and Google rankings would break.
To update the handle manually:
Step 1. Open the product editor.
Step 2. Scroll to the Search engine listing section and click Edit.
Step 3. Update the URL handle field to match your new title (use hyphens, all lowercase).
Step 4. Save. Shopify will ask if you want to create a redirect from the old URL to the new one — say yes if the product is already live and indexed.
Why product titles matter for SEO
The product title becomes the H1 heading on the product page. It’s the most prominent on-page SEO signal for that page.
A few principles for titles that rank:
- Be specific. “Organic Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt - White” outperforms “Classic Tee” for long-tail searches.
- Include the key descriptor. If people search “merino wool hiking socks”, that phrase should be in the title.
- Avoid keyword stuffing. One clear, natural product name works better than “Men’s T-Shirt Organic Cotton Eco Tee Unisex White”.
If you want to update how the product title appears on the page — its size, font, or position relative to other elements — that’s a layout change handled in the Theme Editor or via Fudge.
Changing the product title display on the page
The title text and the title’s visual treatment are separate things.
- Text: Edited in the product admin as described above.
- Visual styling (font, size, weight, position on page): Controlled by your theme. Change it in Theme Editor > product page section settings, or describe the change to Fudge.
For example: “Make the product title larger and move it above the product images” is a layout change — not a content change. Fudge can handle that without touching code.
